Ensuring a Smooth KfW Student Loan Application: Understanding Additional Forms and Documentation

When it comes to pursuing higher education, financial support can play a crucial role in alleviating the financial burden on students. The KfW student loan, offered by Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), is a popular choice among students in Germany. To ensure a successful loan application process, it is essential to be aware of the additional forms and documentation that may be required by KfW under specific circumstances. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the various situations where additional evidence might be necessary and how you can navigate through this process seamlessly.

Initial Application: Proof of Academic Degree

For the initial application of the KfW student loan, you may be required to submit specific evidence depending on your academic status. If you indicate that you have already obtained an academic degree, KfW might request proof of your degree as part of your application.

Submitting Proof of Academic Degree

If you already hold an academic degree and are applying for the KfW student loan, it is crucial to include the necessary documentation as proof. This evidence is essential to establish your educational background and may influence the terms of your loan. To keep the application as smooth as possible, you will be able to see if this proof is required on your dashboard after entering all of your details:

Ongoing KfW Student Loan: Proof of Academic Progress and Extension Certificate

If you already have an ongoing KfW student loan and are in the disbursement phase, it is essential to provide proof of your academic progress after the 6th semester. This step is crucial for the continuation of your loan disbursements. Ensuring that you meet the academic requirements outlined by KfW is essential to maintain the financial assistance you receive. Apart from this proof, you might need to provide an extension certificate to support your ongoing studies.

Proof of Your Academic Progress

To meet the academic progress requirements, you must demonstrate that you have achieved 90 ECTS or 50% of your study credits by the end of the 6th semester. This confirmation, known as the "Leistungsnachweis" or transcript of records, validates your academic achievements and ensures that you are on track with your studies.

To submit this proof, please refer to the section "Haben Sie Ihren Leistungsnachweis vorgelegt?" on the KfW website.

Obtaining an Extension Certificate

For students who are extending their studies beyond the 10th semester, KfW requires evidence that they are expected to complete their studies within the next 4 semesters. This evidence is referred to as the "Verlängerungsbescheinigung". You can download the form through the KfW website and ask your university to fill it out and confirm it for you.

Once this has been done, you need to submit the document directly to KfW similar to the transcript of records. For more details on how to do that, please refer to the section "Haben Sie Ihre Verlängerungsbescheinigung vorgelegt?" on the KfW website.
